Livelihoods Support Project

BACKGROUND /PROBLEM ANALASIS:

The conflict, along with the fragile situation in Yemen over the past four years, has led to a sharp deterioration in the national economy, a significant decline in job opportunities and income especially in the private sector, and increase in poverty among Public Sector’s Employees due to the stoppage of salaries. The national economy has also shrunk by (50%) and the cumulative losses in GDP are estimated to be 49.9 billion dollars. Estimations show an increase in the inflation rate by (40%), and poverty rates have increased dramatically as about (81%) of Yemenis live below the poverty line level, with an increase of one third since 2014.

As a result, (24) million people need some form of humanitarian and protection assistance of as (14.3) million people among them are in urgent need of such assistance, with an increase of (27%) compared to 2017.

 

 

Project Idea

The main goal of this project is to support the livelihoods of affected households in main productive sectors (Agriculture, and Livestock) in the country by providing needs necessary for Households and local communities in short term and building their capacity to achieve resilience and sustainability in long term. This will be accomplished by implementing effective interventions which will help Households to secure with sustainable income and to use their own available resources to secure their needs.  

These interventions will help the community to have the chance to sustain livelihoods by increasing productivity and income through improve the quality of products and services. In addition, the project will also help those Households be increasing their income to have a better access to basic services and the linkage between local communities and reducing the gap of Development during Emergency.

These interventions will also give an opportunity to provide sustainable support, which will help in increasing the unity between the communities to solve food insecurity issues and health problems. These interventions will take into consideration the gender equality by providing women with job opportunities to help them to grow.

 

SMEPS will ensure that all procedures required to implement the project will be implemented with quality and according to standards and guidelines of Emergency Programs and WFP. This will include the effective coordination with all stakeholders in the targeted sectors including (WFP Branches, Local Authorities, Local Community, etc) to ensure involving protection and gender in all project’s stages. SMEPS’s wide experience will consider past lessons learned and past interventions in agriculture and FFA sectors and all procedures, which we took to reduce the effects of any expected risks such as insecurity issues, fluctuation of local market. etc) by hiring a strong team with solid experience to deal with similar situations, and whom will be able to have a strong and effective communication with the local communities.

Project Goals

The main goal of this project is to discover creative methods to sustain livelihoods in rural areas and to strengthening the resilience of local communities in Yemen by supporting the major productive sectors in Yemen (Agriculture – Livestock – Fish). The goals include:

  • Support small holders’ producers to increase their income and improve their livelihoods to achieve a sustainable Livelihoods and Food Security.
  • Encouraging investments that link small holders with markets to help selling their products and expand their business.
  • Conditional cash grants and technical support to improve human capital, assets, natural resource, productivity and surplus, and market access for small farmers, fishers and livestock breeders.
  • Restoring the basic sources of income for Households in the agriculture and livestock sectors, rehabilitating water and agricultural sources, enhancing food productivity and food diversity, and promoting as much as possible the principle of gender equality by providing women with job opportunities that help them growing.
  • Provide cash transfers to Households participating in FFA including assets creation and restoration activities to support their income.
  • Contribute in reducing production losses from agricultural crops and food.
  • Contribute in achieving food security for the targeted communities.
  • Restoring livelihoods for target groups.
  • Reducing the unemployment records and creating new job opportunities for men and women in targeted communities.
  • Reducing production costs and increasing the quantity and quality of production.
